JEE Main 2026 Counselling (JoSAA): Registration, Choice Filling & Seat Allotment Guide

After your JEE Main and JEE Advanced results, JoSAA Counselling 2026 is the single process that determines which college and branch you actually get. Every seat in IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs is allocated through this centralized portal, and missing any deadline here can cost you your admission entirely.

JoSAA registration is tentatively opening on June 2, 2026 at josaa.nic.in. This guide covers the complete process step by step: who is eligible, how to register, how to fill choices correctly, what freeze, float, and slide mean, documents required, and what happens after seat allotment.

Step 1: JoSAA 2026 Registration

Candidates have to log in using their JEE Main application number and password to complete the registration and JoSAA choice filling 2026.

Step 1: Visit josaa.nic.in and click on the candidate login

Step 2: Log in using your JEE Main 2026 application number and password

Step 3: Your details will be automatically fetched from the JEE Main database. Verify them carefully

Step 4: Change your password and complete registration

Registration and choice filling open simultaneously. As soon as you register, you can begin filling your college and branch preferences.

Step 2: JoSAA Choice Filling 2026

Choice filling is the most critical step in the entire JoSAA process. Applicants must add as many choices as possible from the list in order of their preference. Candidates can change the order of their preferences in the list.

Your seat allotment is based entirely on your rank, category, and the order of choices you fill. A wrong order can result in getting a lower preference college even if a better one had seats available.

How to fill choices:

Step 1: Log in to the JoSAA portal after completing registration

Step 2: Select institute type (IIT, NIT, IIIT, GFTI), then the institute name, then the programme

Step 3: Add it to your list. Repeat for all preferences

Step 4: Arrange the list in your true order of preference. Your most desired college and branch goes at the top

Step 5: Review the order carefully. You can modify it as many times as you want before the locking deadline

Step 6: Lock your choices before the deadline. Candidates must lock in their choices before the cutoff date, or else the system will automatically finalise their last preference order.

Tips for Choice Filling

  • Add at least 50 to 80 choices covering all realistic options across IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs
  • Place your absolute dream college and branch at the top, even if it seems difficult to get
  • Do not skip mid-tier options. These serve as safety choices if your rank does not match the top preferences
  • Always refer to previous year JoSAA opening and closing ranks before finalising order
  • Home State quota at NITs gives you significantly relaxed closing ranks. Use it in your list

Step 3: Mock Seat Allotment

The mock seat allotment is conducted to help students understand which colleges they might get into based on their choices. Students will also be able to modify their filled choices based on the JoSAA mock seat allotment.

JoSAA conducts two mock seat allotments before the final locking deadline. These are not binding and only show you an estimate of your likely allotment based on your current choice order. Use this opportunity to adjust and reorder your preferences if the mock result does not match what you expected.

Step 4: Seat Allotment Rounds

JoSAA conducts 6 rounds of seat allotment. After each round, candidates with a seat allotment must respond by choosing one of three options: Freeze, Float, or Slide.

Freeze, Float, Slide Explained

OptionWhat It MeansBest For
FreezeAccept current seat, exit further roundsSatisfied with allotment, do not want to risk it
FloatAccept current seat, remain eligible for better college or branch from your higher preferences in next roundWant to try for a better option but do not want to lose current seat
SlideStay in same institute, try for a better branch within it in next roundHappy with college but want a better branch

The Float option allows the candidate to accept the current seat while also being considered for a better course or institute in the upcoming JoSAA rounds. The candidate retains the allotted seat unless a better one is offered in later rounds.

If you freeze, you exit all future rounds and proceed directly to document verification and reporting. If you do nothing and miss the deadline, your allotted seat is cancelled.

Step 5: Seat Acceptance Fee Payment

After each round's allotment, candidates who want to accept the seat must pay the seat acceptance fee online. This fee is adjusted against your final admission fee.

CategorySeat Acceptance Fee
General / OBC-NCL / EWSRs 35,000
SC / ST / PwDRs 15,000

If you do not accept the allotted seat by paying the seat acceptance fee before the deadline, you will not be considered for further rounds of counselling. If you withdraw before the final round, the fee is refunded after deducting a processing fee of Rs 3,000.

Step 6: Document Upload and Verification

After accepting a seat, candidates must upload the required documents online for verification. If there is any discrepancy or missing document, the verification officer will raise a query that must be resolved within the deadline.

Documents required for JoSAA 2026:

  • Class 10 certificate (for date of birth proof)
  • Class 12 marksheet or pass certificate
  • JEE Main 2026 scorecard
  • JEE Advanced 2026 scorecard (if applicable)
  • Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS, if applicable)
  • PwD certificate (if applicable)
  • Passport-size photographs
  • Proof of seat acceptance fee payment

All documents must be self-attested and in the format specified by JoSAA.

Step 7: Reporting to the Institute

After the final round of allotment and document verification, candidates must report to their allotted institute to complete the physical admission process. Reporting dates are specified by JoSAA and the institute separately.

Failing to report by the deadline will result in cancellation of the allotted seat.

What Happens After JoSAA: CSAB Counselling

After all the rounds, any vacant seats remaining will be allotted via the CSAB counselling 2026. CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) conducts special rounds for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs after JoSAA concludes. Students who did not get a seat in JoSAA or want to try for specific colleges can participate in CSAB special counselling in August 2026.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in JoSAA 2026

Not filling enough choices

Students who fill only 10 to 15 choices risk not getting any allotment if those options have very competitive closing ranks. Fill 50 to 80 choices to be safe.

Placing safe choices above dream choices

Your list must reflect your true preference order from top to bottom. If IIT Bombay CSE is your dream, it goes at the top, not below your safe NIT option.

Missing the locking deadline

JoSAA automatically finalises your last saved order if you do not manually lock. But if you forget to save any changes, the old order stays. Always lock manually before the deadline.

Not paying the seat acceptance fee on time

Missing the fee deadline after a seat is allotted means your seat is cancelled and you are excluded from further rounds.

Ignoring Home State quota

If you are from a state that has a good NIT, always include that NIT under Home State quota in your list. Closing ranks for Home State are often 10,000 to 30,000 more relaxed than Other State quota.

Conclusion

JoSAA Counselling 2026 is the final and most important step in your engineering admission journey. Registration opens tentatively on June 2, 2026, and the entire process runs through multiple rounds until late July.

Fill as many choices as possible, arrange them in your true preference order, use the mock allotment to calibrate your list, and never miss a fee or document deadline. One missed step can undo months of hard work.
