Computer Science Engineering (CSE)

The most competitive and highest-paying branch across all IITs. CSE at old IITs closes between AIR 66 (IIT Bombay) and AIR 950 (IIT BHU). For newer IITs, CSE closes between AIR 3,000 and 6,000. Placement rate is nearly 100% at top IITs.

Mathematics and Computing (MnC)

Increasingly competitive, with closing ranks now close to or matching CSE at several IITs. Especially strong at IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Kanpur. Opens doors to quant finance, data science, and AI roles with packages comparable to CSE.

Electrical Engineering (EE) and Electronics (ECE)

Strong placements in semiconductors, VLSI, hardware, and software. Closes between AIR 433 (IIT Bombay) and AIR 2,500 (IIT Guwahati) for General category. Excellent for students targeting chip design, embedded systems, or core tech.

Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

Newer branches introduced at IITs in the past three to four years. AI and Data Science and MnC cutoffs now rival or exceed ECE/Electrical at most IITs. These branches are growing rapidly and offer some of the most in-demand career profiles.

Mechanical, Civil, and Chemical Engineering

Core engineering branches have wider closing ranks, typically between 1,400 and 10,000 depending on the IIT. Placements average Rs 8 to 15 LPA with strong acceptance into M.Tech programmes and PSU jobs through GATE.

Old IIT vs New IIT: What You Actually Need to Know

This question comes up every year during JoSAA. Here is a clear answer.

ChoiceWhen to Prefer It
Old IIT, lower branch (Mechanical, Civil)If research, UPSC, or global MS/PhD is your goal. Brand value of IIT Bombay/Delhi remains unmatched regardless of branch.
New IIT, CSEIf software career is the goal, CSE at a newer IIT often outperforms Mechanical at an old IIT purely on placement outcomes.
Old IIT, CSE or EEBest of all worlds. Aim here if your rank allows it.

Even Mechanical or Chemical from IIT Bombay has elite non-core placements in consulting and finance. Better alumni network, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi alumni networks are unmatched.
